This type of dance focuses on enhancing one’s posture and flexibility.

Moreover, ballet has undoubtedly maintained Sheena Gough’s fitness level even though she can still showcase her dance skills at an impressive 89 years old.

The individual in their eighties, who received training in London And Paris, who never sought the spotlight, started sharing her knowledge with others after she injured herself at 17.

She finally took off her ballet shoes for good after 72 years just last week.

Her pupils, many of whom journeyed hundreds of miles weekly to be present for her ninety-minute sessions, Edinburgh described it as 'the conclusion of an epoch'.

However, Ms. Gough mentioned that although she intends to focus on her house and garden, she hasn’t excluded the possibility of providing private tutorials to previous pupils who reach out to her.

She stated: "I claim I've stopped, but only time will tell."

During her dance career, Ms. Gough studied in Paris with the late Dame Margot Fonteyn, who is considered one of the finest ballet dancers of all time. She earned the prestigious title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta at the Royal Ballet following an appointment made by Queen Elizabeth II.

However, despite her enduring passion for ballet, following an ankle injury sustained during practice in London, she found that she derived greater pleasure from instructing others.

After returning to Edinburgh to recuperate, she took up teaching at her old ballet school.

And then, lo and behold, I realized I was much more content with teaching than performing," she stated. "As soon as I began teaching at 17, I found it to be quite suitable for me because I prefer not having all the attention focused solely on myself.

The grandmother has witnessed her students progress to dance with the Royal Ballet, International Ballet, and British Ballet companies.

Her journey toward success started when she joined the Scottish School of Ballet in Edinburgh at the age of 14.

By the time she was 17 years old, her abilities had attracted the attention of the renowned English ballet dancer and choreographer Anton Dolin. He pleaded with her parents to allow her to study under the tutelage of the Bolshoi-trained Olga Preobrajenska in Paris.

Ms. Gough stated, "It wasn't really considered a school; it was more of an institution where renowned dancers worldwide would gather for her lessons. This made it somewhat intimidating."

This is where she encountered Dame Margot, who was one of the students in the lessons that were taught in French.

Tracy Hawkes, a ballet dancer and owner of the dance studio where Ms Gough’s classes took place, referred to her as a 'mentor' and 'one of the grand ladies of Scotland.'

She remarked, "It’s incredible to have someone who has experienced numerous changes in style and teaching methodologies over many decades yet remains an unparalleled source of knowledge and experience. The fact that this person continues to be actively involved despite being almost 90 years old is truly remarkable."
