Govt Urges Scrutiny of Childcare Providers After Shocking Child Murders in Okahandja

The authorities have demanded rigorous oversight and comprehensive screening procedures for everyone responsible for looking after children.

This occurred following the disappearance of two minors in the tranquil garden town of Okahandja, located on the outskirts of the capital, with their bodies being discovered deceased afterward.

On Saturday, Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security Minister Lucia Iipumbu issued a statement regarding the killings of children, describing them as horrifying. She emphasized that even one kid losing their life in such situations is unacceptable.

The two events that occurred in recent weeks have enraged the locals.

"We as a community need to stay alert and promptly report any questionable activities or issues related to the protection and well-being of our children," she stated.

Iipumbu stated: “The killing of just one child is unacceptable—having two such heinous acts occur within a brief period should be acknowledged as a nationwide emergency. It’s imperative that we do not trivialize this sorrow. Our young ones represent the country’s future, and every effort must be made to safeguard them.”

She motivated communities to take on roles akin to guardians and parental figures for children, emphasizing a shared duty to safeguard those who are vulnerable.

I want to reassure the country that our law enforcement agencies are completely prepared.

I have consequently instructed the Inspector General to utilize the finest resources of the Namibian Police to conduct an urgent and comprehensive investigation into these offenses. It is also ensured that the individuals responsible will be promptly caught and brought to justice,” stated Iipumbu.

The minister advocated for establishing child protection centers.

"In addition, I urge all organizations that engage with children — including

Schools, churches, hospitals, and other organizations focused on children must swiftly create and enforce child protection and safety guidelines,” she stated.
